I recently discovered the benefits of stretching on the body. Yesss… not until recently *smiles*.
I have a long history of exercising consistently.
At first – a few years back, my main form of exercise was jogging in the park, plus a few gym sessions now and then. But of late, I have been paying more attention to workouts that strengthen my body.
What that means is, muscles get tight and I actually notice. You know generally, our bodies can get tense from fatigue, stress, etc… and what we tend to do is brush it off. However, once you really start paying attention to your body, you will begin to notice any changes that take place.
So yeah these days when my muscles get tight, I notice the discomfort. And I have found that stretching is the answer! My earlier experiences with serious stretching had been the couple of times it was prescribed by the physiotherapist – first when I was involved in a car accident that hurt by back and then when I had hurt my shoulder a couple of years back… part of the treatment I received involved stretches to loosen up those muscles and help them heal and function normally again.
What’s different this time is, I didn’t need any prescriptions or instructions. I have simply found that stretching is a huge part of health living. So, if you have not been stretching… try it.
Find a comfortable spot at home and make time.
Here are some benefits of stretching per the University of California Wellness Center:
- Increased Nutrients and Reduced Soreness: Most people know that stretching increases blood supply, but they do not realize that it also increases nutrient supply to muscles. Because stretching allows blood to flow through your body, the nutrients in the blood are being carried and spread out all throughout your body as well. An increased blood and nutrient supply also helps reduce soreness.
- Calmed Mind: Stretching provides your mind with a mental break. It allows you to recharge and refresh the blood flow throughout your body, resulting in a calmer and more peaceful mindset.
The reason below as explained by Health Fitness Revolution is also why I wanted to call your attention to the importance of stretching:
- Encourages an optimistic outlook – A buildup of stress causes your muscles to contract, making you feel tense and uneasy. This tension can lead to having a negative impact on mind as well as your body. Stretching exercises have powerful stress-busting abilities. Stretching soon after waking up can help jump-start the mind and body. Stretching loosens tight muscles which helps your muscles both relax and increase blood flow. It also encourages the release of endorphins, providing a sense of tranquility and euphoria. Stretching directly before bed will even give you a more comfortable sleeping experience.
These stretches helped with my lower abdominal muscles and also loosened up lower back muscles which were tense after the previous day’s exercises.
Be sure to stretch gently so as not to suffer muscle tears. Also, consult a professional to help with the best stretches for you.
