More than a year into our home-based business, I began researching the power of the mind. I had often heard that our minds are more powerful than we can imagine and I was curious as to how. How could I program my mind to get the results I wanted from my business?
You see, there are 2 kinds of people in business: Type 1: not asking for much, just looking for some additional income. Type 2: playing to win big by making serious income and improving their lives. Type 2s must go the extra mile in learning new strategies and processes. In this group, failure is not an option, and every tool is used to develop a successful business. Your mind becomes one of your most important assets.
The books I continue to read on the mind have empowered me and helped propel my business to the next level.
The Conscious mind & the Subconscious mind
The human mind consists of two levels: the conscious mind and the subconscious mind.
The conscious mind is the logical, deliberate, analytical part of our brains. It thinks, uses the five senses (of sight, smell, touch, taste and hearing) to gather information, process it and act on it. It seeks answers, seeking to understand. It includes all that we are aware of. Whatever we think about and process mentally is done by the conscious mind.
Then, there’s the subconscious mind, where all of our thoughts, ideas and feelings are stored. It perceives and feels, it is associated with the dreaming, reflecting and sleeping state. It controls our autonomic body functions such as breathing, digestion, heart beat and other involuntary actions because that is what it has been programmed to do. It also takes over our ‘second nature’ activities like cooking, riding a bike, etc. You learn it and the subconscious mind executes it. Interestingly, the subconscious mind is responsible for over 90% of our mental activity. It is the part of our mind that is unable to reason, and yet does the work that we are not aware of.
The subconscious represents our habitual thoughts, hence it is programmable. Just like a computer, it functions according to the things we have fed it over the years. As children, our parents, friends, family members, teachers, all contribute in writing on our computer (mind) program by the things they say to us, and the things they show us. These influence and shape us as we grow older because the subconscious acts on them automatically. This explains why you can often tell a person’s personality from the people they associated with most while growing up.
Today, advertisers use this to influence us. Have you noticed that beer or cigarette advertisements often feature happy, healthy people on the beaches, enjoying life and having a great time … even before the product is ever mentioned? This allows our subconscious minds to begin to associate these happy images with the product and makes us feel good about consuming them.
The subconscious mind does not think. It works off of the information you feed it by interpreting images, words and feelings literally. This gives you the power to program it the way you want it to function. In order to create the life you want, it is imperative that you take control of your subconscious mind. Whatever we program into our subconscious mind will be manifested through the power of God (some people call it the Universe). This is why we are often cautioned (even in the Bible), to watch our thoughts, because they will become reality. Whatever you think, you bring forth.
It is all in your mind
To program your mind for success: 1) make regular positive deposits into your mind’s bank by using positive statements and affirmations, reading positive books, watching positive programs on TV. 2) Avoiding negative deposits by yourself and others. 3) It is also very important that we perform the same tasks that create success repeatedly so that the subconscious mind would automatically recreate them. 4) Take time daily to weed out and delete unhealthy, toxic deposits that will be naturally made by us or in the environment we find ourselves in.
Look at it this way: the conscious mind is like the gardener with a seed (this seed = your thoughts) and the subconscious mind is the fertile soil. The two work together to create your reality. Whatever seed the gardener sows into the fertile soil, will germinate into the plant we choose. Once planted, it is difficult to explain how the seed goes from just that – a tiny ‘seed’, to a plant. This is where the Most High comes in. All I know is, if you sow weeds, you will reap weeds. If you sow apples, you will reap apples. If you sow poverty, that you will reap as well. The one who sows prosperity, will most certainly reap prosperity.
Guard and protect your mind. Program it to achieve great things. Erase negativity, so that you can sow positivity and abundance. Refuse to nurture thoughts of failure, inadequacy, envy, lack, strife, and ill-health. Feed your mind and take the necessary steps to bring about abundance, prosperity, happiness, love … and surely, these will begin to manifest. You are powerful beyond all imagination because the Most High lives in you!
